This fall, Musical-Haiti-USA, led by Maryann and Dan Desaulniers, organized an instrument drive for EMNCG and the Haitian national music organization ANADEMH. Following a news article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in July (see “Media”), the instruments started to roll in. Altogether, 52 instruments were collected for Haiti, both from private individuals and various music stores. The Brass Bell in Whitefish Bay, WI, donated two violins, violin repair work, and various accessories such as strings and cables, guitar boxes and discounts. Uncle Bob’s Music Store contributed an electrical mixer and two large speakers at a very discounted price. In addition, they also donated accessories like mixer cables and electric guitar strings.

From clarinets to large speakers and an electric piano donated by Dan himself, there was a lot to do! Maryann did most of the tedious packing, even using towels, sheets and clothing of their own, including her grandmother’s doilies, as useful packaging material. Nick Contorno also helped to coordinate the evaluation of the instruments before they were sent to Haiti.

After much hard work collecting, repairing, storing and packing everything, in early November the instruments were on 3 pallets and plastic wrapped. They filled the 10-foot U-Haul truck Dan rented and drove to Germantown. Jennifer Maney accompanied Maryann in a second car to help the D&G employee get the boxes off the truck. D&G Transportation in Germantown, WI, was very kind and helpful in getting the instruments to Florida in time for the last shipping container of the year goint to Haiti.

In addition to the many instruments, band uniforms were also donated. They will be sent to EMNCG because they are blue, to match the music school’s chosen colors of blue and gold.

A total of 35 boxes were shipped, 7 for EMNCG and the rest for the national music organization which will distribute the instruments to 14+ music schools in the poorer sections of Haiti.
